6 Modern Kitchen Features Every Home Should Have

The kitchen is often touted as being the most important room in the home. To take full advantage of this area, however, you should design it with a few basic features. While no two homeowners have the exact same needs, here are six features that all kitchens should have.

#1) Lighting

The right lighting is an essential element to an attractive, modern kitchen. It will illuminate the surrounding area so that you and your family can better use this space, and it will set a relaxing atmospheric mood. Rather than using a generic overhead fixture, though, consider an alternative lighting solution like a chandelier, pendant lighting, wall sconce or recessed lighting.

In this kitchen renovation, we added some very cool remote controlled ceiling lights that change color, new granite counter tops, new doors, and tile backslash.

#2) Backsplash

A backsplash offers both aesthetic and functional benefits for your kitchen. Using it, you can incorporate new colors and patterns into your kitchen’s décor while also protecting the wall from grease and dirt. Backsplashes are installed on the wall above the stove and surrounding counters. Whether your kitchen walls are painted or covered with wallpaper, a backsplash will protect them from damage.

Backsplash tiles are typically made of one of the following materials:

  • Ceramic
  • Glass
  • Steel
  • Granite
  • Wood
  • Cement
  • Aluminum

#3) Island

Assuming you have the space, consider installing an island in your kitchen. Even if it’s a small 4-foot-by-4-foot island, it will enhance the décor by filling otherwise voided space. Furthermore, you and your family can use an island to prepare food. This additional counter space is perfect for cutting vegetables, seasoning meats or performing other culinary tasks.

#4) Modern Appliances

Don’t overlook the importance of using modern appliances in your kitchen. To create an attractive, cohesive décor, your appliances must have a similar color and style. Stainless steel appliances are always a popular choice, but you can also use all-white or all-black appliances. Just remember to use a cohesive color and style throughout all your kitchen appliances. The dishwasher, oven, refrigerator and microwave should have a similar appearance.

#5) Stools

Stools are the perfect accessory to use in conjunction with your kitchen’s island. They allow you and your family to use the island as a small table. When you’re busy and want to eat fast, you can prepare a snack or meal and eat it at the island.

#6)  Cohesive Color Scheme

Finally, your kitchen should have a cohesive color scheme in which all colors compliment each other. According to HGTV, some of the most popular kitchen colors include white, red, yellow, green, gray and blue. Whether you use these or other colors, though, make sure they match. Following these tips will help you create a more attractive, functional kitchen in your home.
